Starting Gwyn Lo with no current use of hormonal contraception

Day 1 start1

  • If patients apply the patch during the first 24 hours of their menstrual period, no backup contraception is needed
  • If the patch is applied after the first 24 hours of menstruation, backup nonhormonal contraception is needed for the first 7 days of the first cycle

OR

Sunday start1

  • Patients apply the patch on the first Sunday after menstruation begins
  • Backup with nonhormonal contraception for 7 days of the first cycle only
  • No backup is needed if your patient's period starts on Sunday and they apply their first Gwyn Lo patch that day

Starting Gwyn Lo after switching from another hormonal contraceptive

For patients using an oral contraceptive, transdermal system, vaginal ring, or injection1

  • Start Gwyn Lo when the next cycle of the prior method would begin
  • If patients have gone more than 7 days without hormonal contraceptive coverage before starting Gwyn Lo, use backup nonhormonal contraception for the first 7 days

For patients with an implant or intrauterine system (IUS)1

  • Start Gwyn Lo on the day of device removal
  • If the IUS is not removed on the first day of the menstrual cycle, use backup nonhormonal contraception for the first 7 days of patch use

Counsel patients that if they do not get their period within a week of the last cycle of the prior method, they should check with a healthcare professional to rule out pregnancy. If no pregnancy has occurred, start Gwyn Lo.1
